Crazy weather!

December 21st, 2008 No Comments

Yesterday it was 70 F. Tonight it will get down to 19F. I find this very odd for the first official day of winter. I am also shocked that I have not gotten sick from the constant warm/cold changes the seems to happen each week.

I find it annoying to have to go through 4 seasons in a week. I have to be sure to have all sorts of clothes with me to be ready for all of it. Sounds like the scientists were not too far off on the whole global warming idea…

I have noticed that the weather here in Atlanta and around the USA is a bit weird. Some days it is below freezing and others it is over 60F in the same week. Today it is around 60F and pouring rain all day. The forecast for the weekend is below freezing again and sunny.

I attribute this to changing climate worldwide. I find myself looking to travel to warm and sunny places because of the crap weather here. I also love the beach so that tends to sway my decisions a fair bit.

Speaking of beaches I have Colombia and Dominica on the docket for next year. I am ready for another vacation already. The work standards in the USA are very conducive to burn out.

I am applying to be part of a clinical research study on a new jet lag medicine. It includes 4 days on the French/German border and a flight to and from there on a private jet. If I complete the entire study I will get $2500. If I do not get accepted I will be compensated for the time I have spent.

If you are curious you can read more at www.jetlagstudty.com. I think they are still looking for more people to participate. I believe this will be at interesting experience and I am really curious if the pill works. It would be great to be able to travel and not have to suffer with jet lag. I get it pretty bad and hate it!

Diet Change

October 11th, 2008 No Comments

It seems that I am gaining too much weight and I am going to have to change my diet. My goal is to eat more salads and less crap during the week. I have been very stressed and crushed for time at work so I have been eating badly. It has caught up.

I just had a chicken caesar salad for lunch and I have to admit that I feel better than if I had my normal lunch. I must also point out that I am not as full and predict I will be hungry again sooner. It will definitely take me time to adjust to the lower caloric intake.

Starting next week I am going to make a conscious effort to eat at least 3 salads for lunch.

A friend of mine who lost his fiance to cancer is now very active in the battle against it. He took his passion for motorcycles, golf, and finding a cure for cancer and combined them. I had a look at his website and thought it is quite good.

Two Wheel Driver

They currently have stories, bio’s, and a trailer up and they are still working on the site. I am quite interested in what they are doing and also quite fond of it. Check it out.

I just watched the video on apple.com for the new iPhone SDK and App Store. It looks very promising and I cannot wait to see what apps come out. The SDK is free to download and available now. They did show a demo of AIM among other apps and I am drooling over the possibilities.

I am hoping that some good apps that would be useful for travel will come out. The first thing I want to see is a PDF/eBook reader for the iPhone. if I can buy Lonely Planet PDF’s, transfer to my iPhone, and read them easily then I no longer have to lug around guidebooks. This also goes for novels.

I would also like to see some sort of program where I can track all of my travel tickets, reservations, dates, etc. It should integrate with the built in calendar, contacts, and google maps on the iPhone. Since I travel for pleasure and work this would be infinitely useful to me. I can quickly and easily check my info on my phone eliminating the need for more paper or the slow EDGE connection to my email.

Some other apps I would like to see are: RSS Reader, sync with gcal and ical, firefox, audio/video recorder, and download podcasts directly from the iPhone, just to name a few more.

The options are endless and I hope that someone can fill all these gaps eventually!

Lunar Eclipse photo from my back yard!

Click on the photo for full size. Taken with a Nikon D50.

I know this isn’t travel related but I thought it was cool enough to post.

According to this article we should able able to see a full lunar eclipse with some interesting colors. It goes on to say we won’t see another until December 2010. I will try to get some photos if I can and post them. Hope its a clear night. Enjoy!

A friend of mine found these batteries that are AA size and recharge through the USB port of any computer. This is extremely useful for me since I no longer have to carry a charger or extra cables. This saves time, weight, and money. I love it! The price is pretty reasonable as well considering the technology involved. I want to get a set of these and try them for myself to see how long they last versus normal rechargeable batteries.

Its snowing!

January 19th, 2008 No Comments

Most of you are saying “So what, its snowing, its winter time, no big deal.” But you are leaving out the fact that I live in Atlanta.

We currently have 2 inches of snow with at least 1 more on its way. It is big deal here as it almost never snows. The airport must be an absolute mess today since they have VERY limited deicers. Driving is OK for now since the roads are currently just wet. It is supposed to get down to 19 F tonight so I predict black ice and total chaos on the roads later on. The people around here lose the ability to drive once snow/ice hits. I for one will not be venturing out after the water turns to ice, if I can help it.

People are rushing the grocery stores in panic to buy water, candles, etc. Just the typical American over-reaction to everything. Judging from the lines I saw on the news you would think there is a hurricane coming or 10 feet of snow outside. Its a shame really but I bet all the businesses that benefit from this panic buying are happy.

I have some pics and will post them once they are sized and edited. I am working on multiple projects today and will try to squeeze it in!
